Following a consultation appointment, impressions of your teeth are taken and sent to a dental laboratory for construction of custom-made trays.

Trays loaded with peroxide gel are worn, either for a few hours each evening or overnight, for a period of two to three weeks, after which time maximal results have usually been achieved. Whitening will only alter the shade of natural teeth, not restorations, crowns or veneers, so this is worthy of consideration. If you have heavily restored teeth, the shade of the restorations will not change and they could need to be replaced if your natural teeth whiten considerably.

Some teeth whiten more profoundly than others and not every case achieves the same results. It is not therefore possible to guarantee a particular shade. If you smoke or drink reasonable amounts of tea, coffee or red wine, some of the staining will return, but can usually be polished off at hygiene appointments. We can also provide top up treatments as required for your smile maintenance and these are offered to you at minimal cost. Sensitivity is frequently encountered during this procedure, so it is less suitable for those who suffer with sensitive teeth as it is likely to make sensitivity worse, albeit temporarily. The important thing to remember is that this is a purely cosmetic treatment with no functional or health benefits. Whiter teeth do not equate to healthier teeth, they just look nicer!
